About Timothy deVries

I am purposively driven to make a memorable impression through art.

My name is Timothy deVries and I am a painter living and working near Hamilton, Ontario. I started painting with some friends in the basement of a student house in Toronto almost twenty years ago. My work was inconsistent and unfocussed, but I loved the immense challenge of giving voice to my inspiration within the physical constraints of paint and canvas. Artistic growth became an important part of my practice, and through perseverance I have continued to hone my craft. Beginning in 2009, I participated for six years in an art collective (Thou Art Party) that hosted monthly parties for visitors attending the popular James Street Art Crawl. Following that, I became a member of Hamilton Artists Inc., and participated in my first professional group show there in 2015. Since then, I have shown my art at the Hamilton Audio-Visual Node, McMaster Innovation Centre, and Hamilton Public Library. In May 2023, I partnered with Millworks Creative on a self-presented solo show of recent work, an event which coincided with the launch of my Instagram profile and website. I am grateful to many people for feeding my interest and guiding my practice up till now.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My art is driven by an interest in memory, history and language. I believe life is far more layered and complex than it appears, yet deeply ordered. My goal as a painter is to reveal the hidden structures of meaning within even the simplest subjects. Using house paint on panels and canvas, I create images that are meant to endure – physically and in the viewer’s memory. In this way I intend to transform how people see and understand reality, inviting viewers to reflect on the depth and richness embedded in ordinary experience.
